Lynxing Gecko

I usually keep a copy of Lynx around to check the accessibility of my webpages. A page that behaves well in Lynx is a job well-done. When downloading it a few days ago (after reading about this on BoingBoing and wondering where my shortcut is), I noticed that it supports ‘Lynx stylesheets’, and wondered how regular browsing with Lynx is like (as apposed to novelty/quick-check usage).

Well, by the time I figured how on earth to read the lss files and edit them (apparently the only thing you can change about the way html elements are styled is their foreground and background colors), I was aching for a user stylesheet that actually understood CSS. Add the fact that Lynx runs in a hideous MS-DOS console (can’t pick a good font, can’t minimize/restore/maximize in the sort of window that most XP apps sport). Lynx is good at being Lynx, but I’d rather have a better way of choosing the home page than editing a config file.

A while ago, I’d read a Safari user’s entry about turning Firefox into “a wicked-fast, standards compliant, CSS-understanding browser that disregards everything except the raw text and layout instructions for sites.” I did that to K-Meleon, for when I need to ‘just read stuff’.

The CSS rules: user style sheet. Adjust to taste. This should work with all Gecko browsers (Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, K-Melon, Galeon), and it seemed to work with IE, but acted a bit quirkily in Opera. Turn off other things that your browser can disable through options, and go forth and enjoy ye web sans superfluousness.

Enjoy the outdoors, and watch for more things to come very soon…. Yes, enjoy! The theme is finally complete: permalinks, pages, sexy webmaster… the theme has it all!. And now the list of thank-you’s: Firas for his Lynx userContent stylesheet which served as an inspiration Michan for helping me in the final stages, and also one of her themes served as inspiration too Chris for kindly letting me use some of his code again even though I’m not very worthy of it
