I just read through this after a long time and find it interesting that he keeps tapping the humour switch every couple sentences. The piece demonstrates a complete mastery over tone because almost all of the fun is in the narrator’s voice.

Thanks for this. I just rediscovered my old Thurber books and can’t stop laughing. To me, this type of humour is timeless, i.e. the human condition doesn’t vary much in some fundamental ways. However, as a woman, I must admit that I have never had the urge to jump in front of a moving vehicle. However, pushing someone into the path of an oncoming car… well that is a completely different thing altogether!

This has always been one of my favorite James Thurber pieces. I laugh like crazy every time I read it. I have been thinking about it a lot lately, probably because I've had several squirrels run out in front of me as I'm driving.
