Kickass article on lyricism in Hole vs. Nirvana

I love this article from Ben Hewitt: ‘Why Courtney Love Was Kurt Cobain’s Lyrical Equal’. I don’t necessarily agree, but he does his research given that we’re in an era where the title Jennifer’s Body gets ripped off for Megan Fox movies.

I’ve always thought ‘Gutless’ has an explosive opening with the chant:

All my friends are embryonic
All my friends are dead and gone
All my friends are microscopic
All my friends wake up alone

Even in their later pop incarnation they came out with jittery openings, cheerfully proclaiming:

Oh make me over! I’m all I wanna be,
A walking study in demonology

Their churning bridges expertly propel lyrics using song arrangement, in e.g. ‘I Think That I Would Die’, ‘Northern Star’, and here in ‘Boys On The Radio’:

If I let you in under my skin, and risen every angel slain
He said he’d never, ever, ever go… Baby, I’ve gone away!

In your endless summer night, I’ll be on the other side
When the water is too deep, I will ease your suffering
When the glitter fades in morning, turn away and you will find my empty eyes.

And there’s real degeneration and gendered desperation in ‘Plump’: “I don’t do dishes—I throw them in the crib.” What’s weird is that if you lay the lyrics to ‘Plump’ and Nirvana’s ‘Drain You’ side-by-side, they’re eerily concordant.

Drain You: “It is now my duty to completely drain you
I travel through a tube, and end up in your infection”
Plump: “Now I’ve stumbled here, failed to make it mine
They say I’m plump, but I throw up all the time”

Drain You: “Chew your meat for you, pass it back and forth
In a passionate kiss, from my mouth to yours
Sloppy lips to lips, you’re my vitamins”
Plump: “I’m eating you: I’m overfed!
Your milk’s in my mouth
It makes me fill up!”

Rappers discover the term ‘Dagnabbit’

I’ve been hearing this oddity recently, and realized: rappers have discovered the three‑syllable‑rhyme potential of ‘Dagnabbit’! Funny.

Black Milk, Give the Drummer Sum (2008):

Ay yo Black back at it, dag nabbit,
Let me let the organ get a stab at it
It’s a wrap for niggas I’m back rapping,
On the track Black blacking the fuck out on the rap, spazzing.

Bun B, The One (Travis Barker Remix) (2009):

It’s Bun Beada the rap addict, I’m back at it
You see me rocking heavy metal, this a black ‘matic
I got a bad habit
For Taking Back Sunday and turning it into a Black Sabbath, dag nabbit!

Mistah F.A.B., Silver Surfer Swagger (2009):

I’m galactic with fly nigga tactics
I stay flipping new shit, my style gymnastics
Boombastic, fresh to death out the casket
Blow gaskets, bastards, niggas can’t grab it, dag nabbit

Camron, Intro (Boss of All Bosses 2) (2010):

I’m back at it, that savage, Mack Daddy black Caddy, and the seat’s Craftmatic
Lucky had a rap habit, cause I had a black ‘matic
Cough on you, like a fabric softener, attract static
Little black magic, few crack addicts, killing ‘em, now I’m killing you wack gadgets
Black tactics, like a jackrabbit, she trife with no knife, backstabbed it, dag nabbit
Cocaine backslab it, don’t have it, no prob, grab plastic
Get your ass kicked, body in a casket, after that put your head in a basket.

I’ll strip away your hard veneer, and see what I can find
The queerest of the queer, the strangest of the strange

I know what’s good for you, I know you’re dying to
I know what’s good for you, I bet you’re dying to…

Won’t you come over, I swear I’ll be nice
My girlfriend told me that you’ve left your wife
I learn to bribe, I learn to say please
Oh wont you lick the pavement for me?
I learn to bribe, I learn to say please
I like you best when you’re on your knees!

I feel good when things are going wrong,
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I only smile in the dark,
My only comfort is the night gone black

Pour your misery down, pour your misery down,
Pour your misery down on me…
